Analogue and Digital Electronics, Electrical Systems or equivalent.

Summary of Content

This module examines power electronic devices, circuits, systems and application. An understanding of the operation and characteristics of the system components will be developed. This will be followed by a study of the performance of a range of power electronic converters and their application. Circuit design and analysis techniques will be developed and commercial software will be employed as appropriate.

Syllabus

The taught syllabus will cover the following areas: Power Electronic Devices: -360b7 Operation and control of, Thyristor, diode, power BJT, power MOSFET, IGBT, Triac, and GTO. -360b7 Cooling systems of power electronic devices and power dissipations. Thermal model, peak and average temperature, transient thermal impedance. Power Electronic Converters: -360b7 Basic switch; ac/dc 1-ph and 3-ph controlled and uncontrolled, full and half wave converters, b7 Mean voltage, waveforms, power factor, distortion factor, overlap. b7 DC/DC converters, forward, fly back, resonant and Cuk. b7 DC/AC inverters, VSI, PWM, Quasi -square. CAD-applications: Structure, modelling strategy, device/circuit/system and behavioural modelling, parameter determination, schematic input, steady-state and transient analysis, post-processing (voltage, current, power, harmonic analysis). Noise and Thermal Aspects: -360b7 Voltage regulation and ripple, b7 Harmonic sources, analysis techniques (e.g. Fourier), and filter specification. b7 EMC considerations (coupling mechanisms, screening, interfaces, grounding. Power Electronics Applications: -360b7 Electric motor drives, switch-mode power supply, b7 HVDC link, b7 FACTS devices and technologies b7 Integration of renewable energy into the electric grid b7 UPS.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module the student should be able to:Describe the characteristics of a range of power electronic devices and relate these to typical applications.Describe and analyse AC/DC, DC/DC, DC/AC and AC/AC static power conversion schemes using MATLAB as appropriate.Describe applications of power electronic conversion schemes and develop a product specification for such schemes synthesised from the needs of the application.Determine and implement an effective measurement and analysis strategy for testing/evaluation of power electronic systems.Describes the principles of EMC and device protection and synthesise solutions to problems in this area.Work in a project team to solve a power electronic application problem.

Teaching / Learning Strategy

-3 The university "strategy for learning" documentation has informed the learning and teaching strategy for this module. The module material will be introduced through lectures, while practical exercises, based on the lecture material, will be given to students for their practical sessions. Tutorials will be used to help explain and elaborate on both the lecture material and the practical exercises and provide opportunities for tutor led formative feedback to students. This is detailed as follows; -360b7 Policy of staff access for students, programme and library induction pack and supporting tour, module handbook providing detailed information. -360b7 Support of a module leader and programme leader, in addition to student representatives - these reflect students' views and concerns at staff-student liaison committee meetings and programme committee meetings. b7 Underpinning support is provided from central university support services including: online study skills facility, student counselling service, LDC, IT support using e-mail and/or on-line resources). -357b7 Knowledge and skills: the module develops knowledge and skills, and uses tools, techniques and methods which are immediately useful to employers, both in the UK and overseas. -357b7 Strong emphasis in the module on industrial or research projects with direct industrial input into the module, including the use of visiting lecturers and industrial visits. b7 The module is designed with very strong professional emphasis, informed directly by industrial expertise of staff and industrial liaison committees and professional body requirements as appropriate to enhance the career opportunities of the students in industry and academia. b7 The lecture delivery will be enhanced by a variety of forms including, where appropriate, videos, computer based models and other multimedia forms. b7 On line learning materials to be available electronically, discussion boards will be used to encourage teacher and peer-to-peer dialogue on certain topic areas where this form of communication would be regarded as effective. b7 Academic staff and the Learning Technologists will continue to work together to develop and operate the module on GCU Learn to ensure student support and information sharing. b7 Students are provided with formative and summative feedback via a variety of mechanisms. Feedback on coursework is provided within 3 working weeks of submission providing information on strengths, weaknesses and suggestions for corrective action. b7 Student feedback on teaching, learning and assessment will be sought at the end of the semester through a module evaluation questionnaire.
