Summary of Content

Content of placement will be determined by the NHS Training Officers responsible for individual students in accordance with facilities & operation of their laboratory to satisfy the HCPC Standards of Proficiency.

Students will complete a practice placement in an IBMS approved pre-registration training laboratory in one of the following disciplines: cellular pathology, clinical chemistry, cytopathology, haematology with hospital transfusion practice, immunology, medical microbiology, virology, transfusion science or a combination of the aforementioned disciplines. While on placement, the student will complete the IBMS Registration Training Portfolio. The Portfolio focuses on generic principles and requires the student to gain essential knowledge and competence in order to work safety and effectively as a Biomedical Scientist. The Portfolio mirrors the HCPC Standards of Proficiency and evidence of knowledge and competence will be collected by the student, under the supervision of a Training Manager, that demonstrates that they have met all the required Standards of Proficiency. An IBMS approved Verifier will independently check that the Standards of Proficiency have been met and the student will conduct a tour of their placement laboratory during which further aspects of training and work can be explored.
