Summary of Content

The aim-2 of this -1 module is to -1 comprehensively support healthcare workers undertaking -1 assessment, -1 management and evaluation of care for patients requiring -1 musculo-skeletal casting or splinting. This will include appraising a range of -1 immobilisation options and -1 determining the -1 management -1 implications based on individual -1 patient's -1 lifestyle and needs.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of the module the student should be able to:1. Analyse contemporary legislation, guidelines, codes of practice, policies and evidence base relevant to the assessment and management including prevention of fractures and soft tissue injury2. Demonstrate non-discriminatory values when ascertaining from the patient the history and the mechanisms by which the injury was sustained.3. Utilise knowledge of normal and abnormal anatomy, physiology and pathophysiology of musculoskeletal injuries and conditions, including the implications for surrounding or underlying structures to assess, analyse and interpret the patients presenting and emerging condition4. Utilise knowledge of the physiology of fracture and soft tissue healing, the factors that inflence healing and the implications of immobilisation on healing to determine the various treatment / management options5.Utilise a person centred approach to discuss and agree / confirm patient's consent to their management / treatment option(s)6.Evaluate health and safety practices within the work environment to ensure maximise safety to self, colleagues and patients7. Role model exemplarly safe practice when handling equipment involved in the management of immobilisation8. Discuss with the patient the care, maintenance and management of the cast / splints plus mobility aids (crutches, walker ) to maximise their effectiveness and minimise risk of further injury or complications9. Based on accumulative professional experience and an understanding of professional accountability alter or modify an aspect of the patient's care plan to enhance their ability to self manage without compromsing their injury and its healing10. Reflect on personal contribution to the multidisiplinary team and recognise limitations by appropriately referring patients when care and treatment is outwith scope of practice or experience11. Identify fracture or soft tissue related complications and emergencies then implement and evaluate the appropriate emergency measures12. Act within scope of professional practice and recognise the importance of maintaining and developing competence related to the immobilisation of fractures and soft tissue injuries13. Audit local fracture / soft tissues services using national standards14. Formulate a learning log to evidence clinical activity and advancement of casting and splinting related knowledge and skills including the analysis of cast and splint applications to confirm their quality

Teaching / Learning Strategy

Lecturers, service partners, users, carers and students will contribute to the authenticity of the teaching and learning experience using case-based scenarios. The care of a selection of patients will be explored in relation to underpinning pharmacology and pathophysiology. Learning and teaching strategies will enhance student engagement, accessibility, flexibility and personalisation of the curriculum through the use of technology/digital learning where appropriate. A series of core lectures will be supported with facilitator and student-led tutorials and directed learning utilising facilitator and student-led activities. Teaching approaches will include a variety of methods which may include seminars, tutorials, group work, workshops, role play, reflective exercises, guided reading and online learning, simulation and other practical activities. Guided and self-directed study, including interactive resources supported by a virtual learning environment, will be used to prepare students for each week's activities and assist in consolidation of their learning.
