Summary of Content

The aim of this module is to develop an individual who is able to analyse and evaluate nursing practice in the care and management of the deteriorating adult patient with emphasis on the wider context of care and knowledge of research-based and reflective practice. Students will be supported to explore the evidence and to develop own practice through engagement with the module syllabus and supervised learning in the workplace. This learning and skill acquisition will enable students to develop the confidence and responsibility required of those who care for deteriorating adult patients.


-360b7 Recognising the deteriorating adult patient, immediate treatment, structured response/escalation and communication tools (NEWS/NEWS2). b7 Cardiac: cardio-vascular patho-physiology, ECG rhythm recognition, heart failure, acute coronary syndromes, sepsis, shock b7 Respiratory: respiratory patho-physiology, respiratory failure, interpretation of arterial blood gases, non-invasive ventilation, tracheostomy care, chest drain management, b7 Renal: renal patho-physiology, acute kidney Injury, fluid management, electrolyte management b7 Gastro-intestinal: acute liver failure, pancreatitis, GI bleeding, nutrition, blood sugar control b7 Cerebro-spinal: neurological assessment, spinal injury, stroke b7 General: reflective practice, assignment guidance, literature searching, quality improvement science, end of life care/DNACPR, challenging conversations, pain management, haemo-dynamic monitoring, delirium, addictions and substance withdrawal

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of the module the student should be able to:1. Explore the patho-physiological processes in relation to the deteriorating adult patient2. Demonstrate a person-centered approach to shared decision making in the context of the adult patient at risk of deterioration3. Reflect on the wider issues of acute care nursing which demonstrates professional accountability and its relationship to professional practice4. Appraise and reflect on evidence based research and its applicability to clinical practice in the context of the deteriorating adult patient5. Develop in-depth knowledge and skills to support recognition and management of the deteriorating adult patient6. Demonstrate effective clinical assessment and monitoring skills in the management of the deteriorating patient

Teaching / Learning Strategy

A variety of teaching and learning strategies will be utilised including; a combination of modified lectures, interactive discussions, workshops, directed/self-directed learning and group presentation. Students will have opportunity for face-to-face contact time with the module team during classroom based study days, excluding individual academic support which will be offered following discussions with the module leader. The aim of the teaching and learning strategy is to support the development of autonomous independent problem solving and decision making skills for practitioners within the parameters of their professional competence, role and employers agreed vicarious liability (or equivalent).
