Summary of Content

This module will provide practitioners with the underpinning knowledge and understanding required to safely and professionally care for a critical care patient. The aim of this module is to develop an individual who is able to analyse and evaluate nursing practice in the care and management of the critically ill patient with emphasis on the wider context of care and knowledge of underpinning evidence and reflective practice. This module will also prepare students to develop the common good attributes of responsibility, responsible leadership and confidence in the care they provide for others.


-360b7 Recognition and management of the complex critical care patient b7 Cardiac: cardio-vascular pathophysiology, advanced ECG rhythm recognition, cardiac pacing, cardiac failure, vasoactive drugs, haemodynamic and cardiac output monitoring, sepsis, shock b7 Respiratory: respiratory pathophysiology, respiratory failure, interpretation of arterial blood gases, non-invasive ventilation, tracheostomy management and care, chest drain management, acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), emergency intubation, mechanical ventilation strategies b7 Renal: renal pathophysiology, acute kidney injury, renal replacement therapy, fluid and electrolyte management b7 Gastro-intestinal: acute liver failure, pancreatitis, gastrointestinal bleeding b7 Cerebro-spinal: neurological assessment, head injuries and brain stem death, organ and tissue donation b7 General: recognition of the deteriorating patient, communication, end of life care, pain management, sedation and delirium in critical care, burns, critical care follow up, patient retrieval and transfer, reflective practice, assignment guidance, literature searching

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of the module the student should be able to:1. Explore the patho-physiological processes in relation to the critical care patient with potential single / multi organ failure2. Develop knowledge of, and explore the skills required, to recognise and manage the complex critically ill patient 3. Evaluate clinical assessment and monitoring skills, with consideration to both non invasive and invasive haemodynamic monitoring devices, to support planning, delivery and evaluation of the effectiveness of clinical interventions4. Appraise evidence based research and its applicability to critical care to improve practice5. Demonstrate a person-centered approach to shared decision making in the context of the critically ill patient6. Reflect on the wider issues of critical care nursing which demonstrates professional accountability and its relationship to professional practice

Teaching / Learning Strategy

A variety of teaching and learning strategies will be utilised. This will be a combination of modified lectures, interactive discussions, practical workshops, tutorials and self-directed learning. Students will normally have opportunity for face to face contact time with the module team for approximately 52 hours, excluding individual academic support which will be offered following discussions with the module leader. The module will also include student participation in group presentations. The fundamental aim of the teaching and learning strategies, irrespective of delivery mode, is to support the development of autonomous independent problem solving and decision making within the parameters of their professional competence, role and employers agreed vicarious liability (or equivalent).
