Syllabus

Develop the communication skills required for professional practice Undertake complex dispensing practice, e.g. paediatric, progressive lenses, prisms, contact lenses Develop further problem solving skills, in a clinical practice setting.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module, students should be able to: Demonstrate communication Skills. The ability to seek and communicate relevant information from and to patients in complex situations in an effective and appropriate mannerFully understand the requirements and dispensing skills appropriate for specialised needs including the groups to whom supply of optical appliances is controlled by statute.Develop a caring, empathic and profession approach to dealing with complex cases within the restraints of a commercial environment.Have the full range of General Optical Council Competencies for Dispensing OpticiansHave a full understanding of the clinical context of the areas of visual science relevant to Ophthalmic Dispensing in a practical, clinical context.Have an updated knowledge of the legislative regulatory framework within which Ophthalmic Dispensing is practiced within the UK

Teaching / Learning Strategy

-2 This module is delivered in practice under supervision of a qualified Ophthalmic Dispensing Optician or Optometrist. Practical experience will be used to document and reflect upon clinical cases as part of their requirements for professional registration. Learning is achieved through experience and feedback from supervisors in practice and module tutors in GCU.
