Summary of Content

This module will allow students to develop a knowledge and understanding of the scientific study of vision, visual processes and related phenomena. The module covers a variety of research studies relevant to contemporary issues in visual neuroscience. Students will be introduced to psychophysical, psychological and physiological investigations into visual function with emphasis placed on the interpretation and synthesis of results from each field. This module will also develop an understanding of surgical and medical management of strabismus. It will also consolidate learning from Advanced Orthoptics 1 and abnormal binocular vision ensuring that the student can evaluate and plan the management of patients in their care. The module will also develop an understanding of the prescribing and dispensing of spectacle corrections for patients with binocular vision anomalies and the prescribing of prisms. Students will be encouraged to develop their understanding of the evidence base for such interventions and the module will use problems solving techniques to help them develop strategies to effectively manage paediatric and adult forms of strabismus and how we assess visual function in patients.


Management of strabismus Non-surgical treatment including orthoptic exercises, prisms, Use of Botulinum A toxin : Treatment: Indications and contraindications, Orthoptic treatment: Prisms in isolation or conjunction with other management strategies; indications, contra-indications, uses of Fresnel prisms (effect on V.A.) and incorporating prisms Surgical Management, pre and post operative assessment Management and types of treatment (including surgery) in cosmetic, and functional cases Prescribing prisms Dispensing issues for children Contact lenses and their use in orthoptics and paediatrics, Refractive error and relationship to incomitance, cataract and aphakia Colour Vision Literature review

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this module students should be able to:1.Understand the indications and contraindications for strabismus surgery, understand other forms of management and how they interlink with surgical options.2. Develop an in depth understanding about the possibilities and limitations of spectacle dispensing related to Orthoptic patients.3.Develop analytical skills and literature appraisal skills.

Teaching / Learning Strategy

A mixture of learning techniques including lectures, tutorials and seminars will be used. Literature review will also be used to help students develop their knowledge and apply evidence based practice to their clinical management understanding. The use of NICE guidelines etc will also be explored.
