Pre-Requisite Knowledge

Employment in an NHS Clinical Physiology department, successful completion of levels 1 and 2 of the Clinical Physiology programme.

Summary of Content

Students will undertake work-based clinical education in their place of employment, under supervision and within their own specialist discipline. The content of the module will be determined by the occupational standards of competence for level 3 as specified by the profession for that discipline. Appropriate practical skills for this level will be taught and evaluated by trainers in the workplace and by internal verifiers. In addition, the ethos of safe and effective practice, respect for the patient and a professional approach to working in an NHS Clinical Physiology department will be emphasised.


The syllabus for individual students will be determined by the occupational standards of competence for level 3 as specified by the appropriate profession for each specialised discipline. This module will build on the clinical knowledge and competencies gained in WBCE2 and progress towards those required for fully qualified Clinical Physiology Practitioners.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this module the student should be able to:1. Demonstrate competence in clinical practice and procedures appropriate to level 3 within their own specialist discipline.2. Assemble a training portfolio of evidence.3. Reflect on clinical practice.

Teaching / Learning Strategy

Acquisition of appropriate clinical competencies will be achieved through work-based learning and supported by trainers in the workplace. Students will be encouraged to reflect on their past and current knowledge and learning experiences within a clinical environment and there will be an emphasis on patient-oriented approaches to skills development. Students will be encouraged to become reflective, self-motivated practitioners.
