Summary of Content

This module should be designed to give students a detailed knowledge of the plaque-related dental diseases and common oral mucosal and oral soft tissue conditions and an understanding of the clinical presentation and management of these. This will include: -Oral surgical procedures and their role in pre- and post-surgical care -Recognition of malignant and potentially malignant lesions and conditions of the oral mucosa and salivary glands -Manifestations of facial pain

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this module students should be able to:1. Demonstrate an understanding and identify the hygiene-therapy role in the pre and post-surgical situation. 2. Demonstrate knowledge and a critical understanding of the clinical presentation and management of the common diseases of the oral tissues including the oral mucosa and salivary glands.3. Demonstrate knowledge and a critical understanding of abnormalities in the oral tissues.4. Demonstrate knowledge and a critical understanding of the features of malignant and potentially malignant lesions and conditions in the oral mucosa.5. Apply knowledge, skills and understanding in practising making the appropriate referral.

Teaching / Learning Strategy

Lectures will supply the theoretical basis of knowledge, which will be enhanced by interactive tutorials, seminars, case studies and clinical studies. Directed learning will promote the enquiring mind and an ability to extract material from a variety of sources. Independent learning is encouraged in preparation for clinical reasoning and continuing professional development.
