Summary of Content

This module provides a student with good understanding of Islamic ethics and culture and lays foundation to the origin of Islam and Islamic life.

Syllabus

Foundations of Islam: Unity and Universality, the world view, revelations from sunnah of the prophet and the Holy Quran Islamic life: Faith, worship: prayers, Zakah, Fasting and Pilgrimages, Fiqh and Ethics Principles & Values in Islam, Moral and Social, Political thoughts and family basis, human rights and education, the emancipation of women. Culture and learning in Islam and languages of Islam. Human science, literary creativity, music and performing arts, handicraft in Islamic culture.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module the student should be able to:1. Interpret the universal message of Islam and the Prophet Mohammed (pbuh). (AM1, AM2).2. Develop an understanding on comparison of the Islam and other religious traditions worldwide (AM1, AM2).3. Summarise the major themes of Holy Quran and illustrate its characteristics as applicable to Islamic ethics and culture (AM5).4. Gain knowledge and understanding of Islamic life, eternal principles of the Muslim faith and values of Islam (AM5, AM8).

Teaching / Learning Strategy

The main teaching method will be based onClass room lectures, seminars, presentations and guest lectures. The students will be expected to perform directed reading of prescribed text books and self-learning tasks on Islamic foundation, ethics, culture and heritage.
