Pre-Requisite Knowledge

Standard grade, German Language Introductory Module or equivalent.

Summary of Content

An extension to the learner's knowledge of the language. Acquisition of a broad general vocabulary. Improvement of communication skills in the language. Introduction to issues of contemporary interest in the countries where the language is spoken. Introduction to analysis of information in the target language.

Syllabus

An extension of the learner's knowledge of the language to include all basic grammatical structures. Acquisition of a broad general vocabulary and elements of subject-specific vocabulary where the language level is appropriate. Improvement of the range and effectiveness of the learner's communication skills in and understanding of the foreign language. Introduction to issues of contemporary interest in the countries where the foreign language is spoken. Introduction to analysis of information in the target language.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this Module the student should be able to:- instigate and sustain conversation over a wider range of topics at moderate speed;- exchange information in the target language in everyday situations;- acquire and provide goods and services in the foreign language in an extended range of situations;- complete short written assignments in the target language with reasonable accuracy over a range of topics;- extract and analyse essential information from written texts on a range of general topics;- summarise and discuss this information both in written and spoken modes.

Teaching / Learning Strategy

Teaching is theme based and classroom activities, which are student-centred, are a mixture of individual, pair and group work. Teaching is a combination of classroom and laboratory sessions. Classes are conducted in part in the target language.

Extracting and analysing essential information from written texts. Oral and written communication skills/co-operation/teamwork.
