Summary of Content

This module provides you with the key practical and transferable reporting skills to find, create, research, write and present original pieces of news journalism, as well as introducing you to production techniques associated with print media. After initial tuition in use of sources, newsgathering techniques, research skills, interviewing skills, accuracy and precision in use of quotations and numerical data, you will go on to produce five short original news reports, involving finding and writing news stories from a patch or ward of a town or city. Lectures and seminars will emphasise the importance of practical ethics and following relevant occupational codes of conduct, and you are required to submit brief reports on your conduct with each original story, reflecting on experiences and any professional or ethical challenges. There will also be introductory classes in sub-editing and print production, using Adobe Indesign or an equivalent industry-standard software. No prior learning or journalism experience are required, though those who have taken the L1 module Newswriting & Journalism will find this module the next logical level of study and practice in journalism.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this module, the student should be able to:1. Use a range of primary & secondary sources, research, interviewing and writing skills for print and online news articles2. Exercise autonomy and initiative in creative developing, planning, pitching and producing key common types of print and online journalism news articles3. Critically evaluate and reflect on the practical application of issues of journalistic ethics, basic legal and regulatory issues, balance and bias, in news reporting, in the light of occupational codes of conduct.4. Demonstrate an ability to sub-edit copy, write headlines and perform basic functions with desktop publishing software
