Summary of Content

This module introduces you to the range of practical skills required to produce various kinds of journalistic feature articles for newspapers and magazines, as well as an understanding of the structures, organisation and practices of the magazine industry. The skills covered in the module include: research; the use of personal sources; developing, refining and marketing feature article ideas; writing; self-editing; presentation. These practical skills will be taught in the context of aspects of journalistic work, including the structure, financing and business of magazines and freelance journalism; and some critical and professional perspectives on the discourse and value / functions of long-form journalistic texts.


Types of Feature Article The Magazine Industry and its financing, including branding Editorial strategy, scheduling, commissioning, production at magazines Distribution methods including digital Pitches, Proposals & Outlines: How to find ideas for, describe, plan and sell a Feature An Introduction to and Critical Reflection on use of Sources Practical ethics and legal considerations for magazine and feature writers Interviewing for a Profile Piece Basics of journalistic style: copy presentation, house style, use of English Feature style: Professional concepts/expectations of "colour" "character" "voice" "liveliness" Arts & Media Reviewing: skills, expertise, production & publication context Opinion Columns style and voice

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this module students should have gained competence in the following key areas:- Use a range of primary & secondary sources, research, interviewing and writing skills for print and online feature articles- Exercise autonomy and initiative in creative developing, planning, pitching and producing key common types of print and online feature article (eg interviews, reviews, columns)- Critically reflect on practical application and experience of journalistic ethics, and basic legal and regulatory issues in feature and magazine journalism, in the light of occupational codes of conduct- Demonstrate a broad knowledge of the structures and economics of the magazine industry, including sectors (business to business, consumer), sources of revenue, distribution methods, strategy and scheduling, commissioning and branding

-360 - 6 x 1hr introductory lectures on features, magazine industry, financing, planning / scheduling / commissioning, distribution -360 - 6 x 1 hr seminars: reviewing published features; discussing topic & reading; outlining & discussing forthcoming tasks; sharing responses to practical challenges - 12 x 120-minute practical workshop in newsroom/lab
