Summary of Content

This module builds on the introduction to knowledge, skills and attitudes covered within Perspectives on People at Work. Learning and Work will facilitate an exploration of learning at three levels: individual, organisational and national. Specifically students will gain an understanding of the issues and challenges associated with learning at these three levels with reference to the roles and contribution of key stakeholders. The module will also allow students the opportunity to explore their own attitudes to learning and gain a deeper understanding of the concepts of learning, personal development and employability.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module students should be able to:-1. Identify and reflect on their own attitudes and approaches to learning2. Examine the processes involved in learning at work5. Assess the value of skills development at individual, organisational and national level6. Design, facilitate and evaluate a learning event

Teaching / Learning Strategy

The teaching, learning and assessment strategy for this module aims to develop and integrate knowledge, skills and understanding regarding learning at the three identified levels. Lecture input on the main topic areas will be provided and will be supplemented by class discussion to facilitate the analysis of theory and good practice and the sharing and analysis of current organisational practice. Active student-centred learning approaches will be employed; case study vignettes, practical activities and group exercises to deepen understanding and develop students' skills. Students will also lead and be assessed on the practical sessions. Teaching will be supported by the Blackboard MLE. Guest speakers from industry will contribute to the module which will also be informed by practice and leading edge research. This module will incorporate two assessments - a group based practical and an exam. The practical exercise, which will count for 50% of the overall marks, will allow students the opportunity to design and deliver a learning event. The examination, again carrying 50% of the overall module marks, will be unseen. The exam will include a compulsory question testing the student's ability to reflect on their learning experiences related to the practical exercise and a further choice of questions on syllabus topics. This approach aims to provide an opportunity to synthesise theory, practice and reflection to encourage engagement with the subject and development of employability.
