This module examines the nature and role of personnel management and the impact of employment legislation on the employment relationship. It offers analysis of theory, organisational practice and skills in the areas of Employee Resourcing, Employee Development and Employee Relations.

Introduction to Personnel ManagementRationale for and methods of job analysisEvaluation of recruitment sourcesAnalysis of selection methods including interviewing, testing and use of assessment centresApplication of equal opportunities in assessment and selection of employeesDetermination of fair reward systems within organisations by use of job evaluation techniques and consideration of Equal Pay Law.Analysis of performance related pay systemsObjectives and application of performance appraisal systemsReview of methods of identifying training needsLearning Theory and relationship with effective training designSkills of training deliveryEvaluation of trainingDesign and handling of disciplinary issuesFair and unfair dismissalManagement of RedundancyThe role and operation of industrial tribunals in resovling industrial disputesThe role of ACAS in resolving disputes

Learning Outcomes

Students will be able to:- understand the practices of and issues surrounding personnel management- assess the effectiveness of particular personnel policies and practices- identify the impact of employment legislation on resourcing and managing individuals at work.- develop skills appropriate to the practice of personnel management and employee development.

Teaching / Learning Strategy

Lectures, seminars and group work will be utilised to foster student understanding. Small groups ,will be utilised to allow students to practice and develop skill areas covered by the course.,,Videos will also be utilised to enhance understanding.
