Summary of Content

Study in three distinct areas provides an introduction to the theory and practice of construction process management: 1. Project Management: an introduction to Project Management and the planning of projects 2. Construction Processes and the Management of these and how Building Information Management can aid these processes 3. Health and Safety Management. (parts 1&2). The percentage of Work Based Learning for this module, as represented by the Independent Learning "Activity Type" , is 62%. There is no Work Based Assessment, but reflective learning is encouraged.


1 Construction Process Management: BIM Building information modelling concepts; The impact of BIM on the UK construction industry The BIM process, protocols and standards for implementing BIM-based projects Facilitation of collaborative working on projects which are driven by BIM Impact and future of BIM on the future of the industry and associated professions 2 Project Management: Introduction to project management Planning, control, and organisational techniques (network analysis, bar charts, resource levelling, progress reporting, work breakdown structures) Introduction to sustainability in the construction industry 3 Health and Safety Management: Current relevant issues within health and safety in the construction industry Construction safety protection measures on site Current legislation regarding Health, Welfare and Safety Site hazards and controls Safe systems of work; strategies and legislation

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this module the student should be able to:1. Understand concepts and theories of Building Information Modelling and understand the concept of the technique/process as applied within construction 2. Comprehend the relationships between planning and control and their influence on site activity 3. Perform project planning techniques in order to plan simulated construction projects 4. Use resource levelling as a tool to manage assets required for construction projects 5. Understand the relevance and concept of sustainability in the construction industry 6. Comprehend the importance of measures required to protect the health and safety of those engaged in the construction process. 7. Understand and show awareness of how health and safety law applies to construction 8. Understand and show awareness of safe systems of work as an integral part of the construction process. Teaching / Learning Strategy

This subject will be delivered by a student led "flipped classroom "core information, and supporting overhead materials will be made available for each lecture electronically in GCU Learn. Seminars/tutorials will concentrate on applying core information in lectures to problem questions given in advance. Students are referred to supporting reading materials to deepen their knowledge and understanding of lecture and seminar topics. Aspects delivered in the 'Flipped Classroom' mode will require students to view lecture material online and complete formative exercises prior to engaging and completing an on-campus seminar with academic support leading the discussions to explore the relevance of the content and specific to their workplace. Hands on experience is gained in the process of planning simulated projects, through the tutorial sessions. Students are supported in their studies by both face-to-face and on-line tutorials and online quiz materials. Student assessment will be based around on-line techniques for three of the assessments and a class based test for the remaining assessment.
