Summary of Content

This module has been designed to support those employed in railway operations or seeking a career in railway operations, to function effectively in the railway operations context, and to provide them with the necessary knowledge and understanding of the elements shown in the syllabus. This module will cover the importance of operators and engineers working closely together. Specific areas covered by the module include basic railway infrastructure, station structures, power supply systems, signalling, communications, rolling stock and engineers' trains.


The following areas will be considered; -360b7 The elements of railway infrastructure, power supply, signalling communications and station structures b7 The characteristics of the various types of electric and diesel vehicles and their applications for heavy rail, light rail, metro systems b7 Operating and engineering interface implications of railway systems b7 The mechanical and electrical systems built on railways b7 Asset ownership arrangements b7 The need for maintenance

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of the module the student should be able to:1. Demonstrate knowledge of railway engineering systems and their interfaces with each other and operations.2. Show understanding of engineering constraints and maintenance requirements which impact on the operation of a railway system3. Apply knowledge and understanding of the different railway systems and their interfaces and of the importance of integration with operational planning and practice.

Teaching / Learning Strategy

This module is designed to be relevant to the student's workplace. The module teaching materials will be made available through GCULearn. This can also be used to facilitate on-line discussions with students. Support will be offered through webinars, e-mail on-line discussion and telephone. A tutorial event at the start of the module will bring students together from the programme. This also provides the opportunity to meet their tutors. Formative assessment will be used not only to encourage knowledge of the subject, but also to help develop transferable skills. Summative assessments will provide evidence of the learning achieved throughout the module. Summative assessments are compulsory. A mark of 35% must be achieved for each summative assessment and an overall mark of 40% must be achieved in the module.
