Summary of Content

The aim of this module is to support those employed in railway operations or seeking a career in railway operations, to function effectively in the railway operations context, and to provide them with the necessary knowledge and understanding of the elements shown in the syllabus This module will introduce students to the fundamentals of safety management. The module introduces the following topics: -426b7 A brief history of railway safety law -426b7 An outline of safety legislation b7 The roles and responsibilities of Health and Safety representatives b7 An introduction to risk management b7 An introduction to safety management systems b7 Railway Group Standards.


The following key areas will be considered: -425b7 safety on the railway -425b7 statute versus common law b7 general health and safety legislation b7 duties of the employer b7 approved codes of practice b7 safety regulations b7 safety critical work b7 risk assessment b7 rights, responsibilities and functions of health and safety representatives b7 qualitative and quantitative risk management b7 review, management and renewal b7 safety policy b7 review of safety management systems -425b7 Railway Group Standards

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the module students should be able to:1. Apply knowledge, skills and understanding of how main line and other railways operate within the structure of current safety law; 2. Critically evaluate the hierarchy of industry-wide safety standards and company standards, and their relationship with safety legislation.3. Apply knowledge, skills and understanding of qualitative and quantitative risk assessments, safety management systems, and the principles of check and audit.

Teaching / Learning Strategy

This module is designed to be relevant to the student's workplace. The module teaching materials will be made available through GCULearn. This can also be used to facilitate on-line discussions with students. Support will be offered through webinars, e-mail on-line discussion and telephone. A tutorial event at the start of the module will bring students together from the programme. This also provides the opportunity to meet their tutors. Formative assessment will be used not only to encourage knowledge of the subject, but also to help develop transferable skills. Summative assessments will provide evidence of the learning achieved throughout the module. Summative assessments are compulsory. A mark of 35% must be achieved for each summative assessment and an overall mark of 40% must be achieved in the module.
