Summary of Content

Construction and services provision of framed, medium size commercial and industrial buildings. Construction: site investigation; site works and support systems; foundations; basement construction; reinforced and prestressed concrete; structural frames; structural fire protection systems; performance requirements of the external envelope; external wall systems; load bearing brick construction; movement control; roof systems and coverings; steel and concrete stairs; insitu and precast concrete floors; resilient and raised floors; demountable partitions and suspended ceilings. Temporary access provision. Services: mechanical and electrical; hot water, steam and air systems; heat transfer; ventilation systems; electrical supply systems; general and emergency lighting. The percentage of Work Based Learning for this module, as represented by the Independent Learning "Activity Type" , is 73%. There is no Work Based Assessment, but reflective learning is encouraged.


Construction and services provision of framed, medium size commercial and industrial buildings. Construction analysis: site investigation procedures and reports; construction site layout and site works; temporary and permanent support systems; pad, beam and pile foundations; basement construction and tanking; reinforced and prestressed concrete, reinforcement scheduling and formwork; rectilinear steel and concrete frames; structural fire protection systems; external wall systems; performance requirements, cross, cellular, diaphragm and fin wall construction; thermal and moisture movement control; metal, stone, concrete and brick cladding, curtain walling, rainscreen cladding, panel walls; beam, girder, truss, space deck, portal roof systems steel, timber and concrete; in-situ, precast and complex concrete ground and suspended floors; steel and concrete stairs; resilient and raised access floors; demountable partitions and suspended ceilings; working places and access provision. Services: mechanical and electrical services; materials and regulations; pipe systems -low, medium and high pressure hot water, steam and air; heat transfer equipment - convective and radiant, direct and indirect; ventilation systems - ducts, fans, filters, attenuators, fire dampers, control dampers, diffusers, louvres; electrical supply systems - mains and submains distribution installations, general and emergency lighting, temporary supplies.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this module the apprentice should be able to:1. Identify and show specialist knowledge of the factors which influence the construction and services provision of framed buildings.2. Apply information from site visits related to site works, support systems, foundations and frames. 3. Interpret and convey information in construction and services drawings. 4. Describe and compare in detail various forms of substructure construction. 5. Explain methods of superstructure construction. 6. Describe in detail methods of forming walls to framed structures. 7. Describe in detail floor and roof structures. 8. Describe and compare in detail various forms of heating, ventilation and electrical supply provision. 9. Teaching / Learning Strategy

Lectures provide the basic theoretical concepts of construction technology and services. They will be complemented by tutorials, site visits, and seminars. There will be a cross module integrated project based on a live site. This includes digital information such as Construction Information Service Online and web based material including manufacturers trade literature. Work Based Education aims to maximise the direct and digitally mediated contact time with students by practicing teaching and learning strategies that use authentic work based scenarios and encourage action learning, enquiry based learning, problem based learning and peer learning. All these approaches aim to directly involve the students in the process of learning and to encourage sharing of learning between students. The module team will determine the level and accuracy of knowledge acquisition at key points in the delivery, inputting when necessary either directly or with the support of external experts who will add to the authenticity, the credibility and application of the education and learning to the workplace.

Exam 01 2.00 60.00 35% Unseen written examinationThe formal examination paper will be of 2 hours duration and will be divided into three sections, Substructure, Superstructure and Services. Each section will have two questions and students should answer one question from each section, plus one additional question from any section. Each question will be 25 marks total.
