Summary of Content

Students will learn the design of structures includes situations where beams are not fully restrained. In addition the means of connection structural elements together need to be defined by the designer, all within the guideline of the current Eurocode. Use of structural timber, masonry and composite construction will be introduced. Use of specialist structural engineering software will be used to enhance the students learning experience.

Euler principles of buckling Principles of lateral torsional buckling Principles of continuity and analysis using the moment distribution method for frame's Connection design including bolting and welding Principles of redistribution moment in concrete design Principles of structural stability Considerations for build-ability, cost and health and safety implications of the proposed design Design of Fundamental Timber Components

On successful completion of this module students should be able to:1. Teaching / Learning Strategy

Case-studies will be used extensively to assist student centred learning and help identify the zones of the task that requires explanation and/or investigation. Understanding that compromise is necessary to satisfy design constraints to present an acceptable solution will be developed. Lectures will combine with seminars to develop knowledge and explore alternatives solutions to the task under consideration. Tutorials will be provided to support students learning. Structural Engineering software will be introduced and encouraged in this module. Learning and teaching strategies will be developed and implemented, appropriate to student needs, to enable all students to participate fully in the module.

In addition, the value engineering inherent in good design can be applied to other topics not normally deemed design. (D1, D2, D5, D6, D7, D8) Self-management skills are essential in addressing the verity of modes of failure, ultimate or serviceability, which a structure may experience to ensure all possible scenarios are checked for safety.
