Summary of Content

Mechanics is used to analyse fluid systems. A study of fluid flow in pipes is undertaken, concentrating on theoretical and analytical aspects. This includes a study of pumps and their applications in water supply, wastewater pumping and power generation. The percentage of Work Based Learning for this module, as represented by the Independent Learning "Activity Type" , is 69%. Work Based Assessment is 0%.


The taught syllabus will cover the following areas: Fluid Statics: Measurement of pressure in fluid systems. Analysis of hydrostatic torsion plane and cylindrical surfaces. Flow in pipes and channels: Energy equation for incompressible flow for laminar and turbulent flow regimes. Energy losses in pipe systems. Friction factors, loss factors and equivalent lengths. Hydraulic gradients. Series, parallel and branched pipe systems. Pressure energy and water hammer. Open channel flow regimes. Flow measurement: Principles of standard flow measuring devices: orifice plates, Venturi meters, notches, weirs, pitot static tunes, brad crested weirs, Venturi flumes. Gauging of rivers and streams. Pumps and turbines: Hydraulic machines, centrifugal pumps, axial flow pumps, pump section, introduction to turbines.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module the student should be able to:Knowledge and Understanding1. Define the properties of stationary and moving fluids.2. Explain the concepts of fluid mechanics.3. Apply the correlation between pressure and depth to solve problems in fluid systems, involving manometry and hydrostatic forces on planes and cylindrical surfaces. 4. Explain the principles of buoyancy. Practical Application5. Calculate energy losses in pipe and channel systems, using standard formulae.6. Determine hydraulic gradients.7. Teaching / Learning Strategy

Teaching will be by lecture with associated tutorials. Handout notes will be available and will indicate the background theory and analysis processes. Application of computer facilities to broaden the perspective on achieving solutions. Laboratory work on fluids will aid the learning process (C1, C2, C5). Work Based Learning that will complement this module will be agreed with each employer and be reflected in the Individual Apprentice Learning Plan for the year.

Transferrable Skills

Ability to adopt the scientific approach which is essential in engineering in order to express fundamental concepts and principles in quantifiable form. The development of the ability to synthesise and analyse engineering problems is a particularly important aspect of this module (D2, D2, D4).
