Summary of Content

This module provides an understanding of structural details, preparation and interpretation of drawing of RC details and measurement of construction.


Structural Detailing RC Structural elements - frames, detailing, bar bending schedule Structural steel schedules. Measurement Measurement of advanced construction including; Basement construction, Concrete and Steel framed structures Cut and fill measurement of earthworks Road construction: Rigid and flexible pavements.

Learning Outcomes

On Completion of this module students should be able to:a) Demonstrate an understanding of structural detailing and be able to assess and interpret reinforced concrete details and bar bending schedule.b) Produce and interpret structural steel schedules and apply, assess and interpret the interface of written and drawn information.c) Apply theoretical learning to practical tasks involving the principles of measurement and good practice in the context of more advanced forms of constructiond) Measure and quantify elements in basement construction, concrete and steel frames and cut and fill operations used in earthworks and road construction using the guidelines prescribed in the SMM7.e) Use software packages based on SMM7, to carry out measurements and production of bills of Quantities.

Teaching / Learning Strategy

The purpose of this module is to assist the students in interpreting drawings with structural details and in gaining confidence in construction measurement using SMM7. Structural Detailing a. Lectures and tutorials to impart theoretical concepts b. Drawing classes and field visits to interpret structural details. Measurement c. Lectures to impart advanced measurement concepts related to concrete and steel framed structures d. Tutorials and workshops enabling students to practice measurement and documentation principles, utilizing drawn information. e. Augmentation of practical demonstrations in the computer laboratory with computerised taking-off and bill production techniques
