Summary of Content

The aim of this module is to allow the student to gain knowledge and understand methods used in field Surveying, quantities of area and volume, cut and fill, transfer the land profile on to a sheet, angle measurements, latitude and departures, setting out curves and buildings and finally building monitoring in the field.


The teaching syllabus will cover the following areas: Linear surveying: Definition of surveying - Basic principles of surveying - Classification of surveys based on nature, project , object and Instruments used - Use and representation of scales in plotting maps/plans - Obstruction to measurement (Pond, buildings) - Basic methods of land surveying (Triangulation and Traverse ) - Planning and carrying out chain survey (Reconnaissance, field work consisting of offsets, survey stations and Survey lines) - Errors in chain surveying - Tape/ chain corrections - Correction for slope, sag, standardization, temperature and pull - Field work and Plotting of chain traversing Levelling principles: Fieldwork and level reduction - Definitions (Levelling, level surface, horizontal plane, horizontal line, vertical plane, vertical line) - Types of levels (Dumpy level , Tilting level, Automatic level) - Methods of levelling (Fly levelling, differential levelling, reciprocal levelling, profile levelling) - Levelling procedures using Rise and fall method and Height of Plane of Collimation method - Errors in levelling - Curvature and refraction. Contouring: Direct and indirect methods of contouring - characteristics of contour plans - Uses of contour Plans - Longitudinal Sections -Cross sections - gradients and formation levels - Calculation of areas of regular and irregular areas (using Simpson's rule and Trapezoidal rule) - Calculation of volume of earthwork - Calculation of capacity of reservoir Theodolite traverses survey methods: Types of theodolite (Transit and non-transit) - Important parts of transit theodolite (Level head, Lower plate and screw, Upper plate and screw, Vertical circle frame, telescope) - Temporary adjustment of a theodolite - Measuring horizontal angles (Repetition method and reiteration) - Measuring vertical angles - Errors in theodolite surveying - Measuring heights and distances keeping instrument axes at same level and instrument axes at different level Control survey: Traverse computations - Magnetic bearings, True bearings, whole circle bearing, quadrant bearings, forward and back bearing, conversion of angles to bearings, rectangular coordinates for traverse survey and closing error in close traverse - Calculation of coordinates from a theodolite traverse - Location of specific items by their latitude and departure in relating to the National Grid System Detail survey: Radiation using total station and data recorder - Setting out: Horizontal control for a small building, Information necessary for setting out of horizontal, vertical and transition curves - Building monitoring - Measure to building control points to check for movement.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module the student should be able to:- Understand different methods used in quantifying land area using Surveying instruments for Engineering projects and estimate the quantities of volume of earthwork. [A1,A2,A3, A4]- Plan and execute survey work by establishing traverse and plot the field with respect to the national grid system for the application of survey principles in civil and construction projects. [B2, B4, B5]- Apply theoretical learning of Land surveying principles to the practical field for conducting traverse and contour maps. [C1, C2]- Effectively contribute to the team work for organizing and planning of group work for data collection, analysis and presentation of the retrieved data.[D3,D4,D6,D7,D8]

Teaching / Learning Strategy

The main teaching method will be based on lectures with laboratory exercises used to relate theoretical concepts to practical experience. The students will be expected to perform directed reading exercises and self-learning exercises on emerging technologies. Tutorials will be used to reinforce the module material and to discuss the issues raised by the directed reading. Private study will be crucial in development of skills in levelling calculations, traverse survey computations and setting out calculations.
