### Summary of Content

The content will place the emphasis on fundamental soil mechanics including sections covering basic geology.

### Syllabus

Soil Physics: Soil model, physical relationships. Soil Classification: Nature, soil types and characteristics, particle size distribution analysis. Atterberg Limits, classification systems. Compaction of Soils: Factors, laboratory and field tests CBR and MCV tests, site specification control of construction. Introduction to Highway Engineering: Earthworks Ground Water: Occurrence, movement, hydraulic gradient. Permeability, factors affecting permeability. Various in-situ and laboratory methods for assessing permeability. Basic filter and drain design. Flow nets, total and effective stress. Environmental hydrogeology. Shear Strength of Soils: Introduction theory. The Mohr Colum failure criterion: types of shear strength tests, pore pressure coefficients, behaviour of soils under stress, residual strength. In-situ shear strength tests. Lateral Earth Pressure: Theories and application to retaining walls, earth-retaining structures and reinforced soil. Introduction to tunnelling methods and techniques.

### Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this module students should be able to:-1. Classify rocks and soils according to the British Soil Classification System Eurocode 7 and the Unified Soil Classification System.2. State the soil characteristics. 3. Understand the basic analysis of soil models. 4. Analyse permeability and seepage through soils. 5. Analyse total and effective pressures and measure basic shear strength parameters.6. Evaluate elementary rock stability problems and in general understand some basic rock mechanics and engineering geology.

### Teaching / Learning Strategy

Teaching will follow traditional lines: lectures for imparting fundamentals of module and tutorials and laboratory work for practising on the fundamentals. These will be supplemented with virtual learning content and site visits. Learning and teaching strategies will be developed and implemented, appropriate to student needs, to enable all students to participate fully in the module.

### Transferrable Skills

Setting personal targets and time management. Learning skills will be enhanced by use of library information and IT skills to research and collate information for case studies. Communication skills will be enhanced by requiring the use of appropriate language when writing and speaking to fulfil assignments and when making presentations in seminars. Group-work skills will be developed to address case study problems including the taking of initiative and assuming responsibility in carrying out agreed tasks. Problem-solving will be required to determine the solution to case studies. The student will be required to define the boundaries of the problem, analyse the components of the problem and identify strategic options.
