Pre-Requisite Knowledge

Normally, Certificate in Higher Education in Ambulance Studies or recognised equivalent.

Summary of Content

In the first three weeks of the module the student is introduced to the research process, peer learning and the concept of evidence based practice (EBP). An emphasis on literature searching and critiquing enables the student to consume the research available to them to keep themselves current within the, increasingly evidence based, environment of healthcare. Being familiar with gathering information from research and the associated processes, informs decision making and further develops the skills of: communication; reason; rationale and judgment, as well as the notion of 84best practice?. A further emphasis is placed on ensuring awareness of compliance with HCPC standards of proficiency for paramedics. This includes the continual themes of the module of research consumption, EBP and best practice. The module takes cognisance of advisory professional bodies such as the College of Paramedics curriculum framework; it is tailored to meet the standards set by the professions registering body, the Health and Care Professionals Council and contributes to the NHS Knowledge and Skills Framework.


This module will allow the student to develop into an autonomous health care professional. Subject areas will reflect the foundations for professional and personal development and assist with lifelong learning, evidence-based practice and reflective practice. Learning Outcomes

1 On successful completion of this module the student should be able to: 1. Apply audit, critical evaluation and reflective skills to develop their own Paramedic practice 2. Explain the role clinical audit and clinical governance play in delivering a safe and effective service. 3. Demonstrate an ability to apply the use of evidence based research to clinical decision making and an understanding of why such an approach is essential. 4. Demonstrate an understanding of what is meant by professionalism and the requirements from the relevant statutory bodies for maintaining fitness to practice, including undertaking appropriate professional development. 5. Explain how evidenced based practice can be used by the Paramedic to help develop effective care plans both autonomously and collaboratively.

Teaching / Learning Strategy

This module builds and expands on some of the knowledge and skills already gathered by the Qualified Ambulance Technician, specifically around their role as a professional provider of prehospital care. The module adopts a collaborative learning approach in the first five weeks while the student attends GCU allowing new skills and knowledge to be encountered in a supportive group environment. The module makes use of research, reflection, peer review and project work to assist in achieving this. In conjunction with this other strategies deployed are that of collaborative learning, group work, group discussion and tutorial.
