Summary of Content

-149 In this module the students will build upon their knowledge and skills of the principles of assessment introduced within clinical practice 1. Students will develop assessment and management skills within clinical specialties including paediatrics, obstetrics, and mental health. Students will be introduced to the commonly presenting emergencies associated with these groups and how to safely and effectively manage these. Students will develop their clinical skills in advanced airway management techniques, peripheral vascular access and advanced life support across the lifespan. They will also extend their knowledge of cardiovascular pathologies and how to interpret ECG in the out-of-hospital environment. Principles of trauma assessment and management will also be introduced.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this module the student should be able to: 1. Discuss the bio-psychosocial assessment of patients which takes account of particular of patient groups2. Describe the necessary adaptations to assessment and management of patients with additional challenges and/or needs3. Demonstrate the development of skills set within the scope of paramedic practice including airway management, vascular access and ECG interpretation4. Demonstrate the management of advanced life support in the out-of-hospital environment5. Demonstrate the assessment and management of the patient presenting with traumatic injuries

Teaching / Learning Strategy

Students will be introduced to key concepts through a blended approach of face to face lectures and tutorials and independent study. This will provide the student with a theoretical grounding to the assessment and management techniques introduced throughout the module. The module will use experiential learning to encourage engagement and application of knowledge. Clinical skills labs, simulated case studies, problem based learning, group discussion and peer facilitated debriefing and feedback as well as tutor led discussions and feedback on clinical skills demonstrated will be used throughout. Expert clinicians and educators in these topic areas will assist in delivery of module content and teaching Students will be able to consolidate this initial learning in the practice environment placement in trimesters B & C.
