Normally, Certificate in Higher Education in Ambulance Studies or recognised equivalent.

Summary of Content

This module provides an opportunity for students to further develop existing clinical skills in a challenging but safe environment. The module will prepare the student to apply the technical and non-technical skills associated with Paramedic practice. Theory and practice will be integrated within clinical practice placement.


This syllabus will introduce the student to advanced clinical skills across the age ranges: Topics that will be explored and assessed within the module include: -360b7 History taking/clinical consultation skills b7 Safety netting skills b7 Assessment & treatment skills of minor injuries and minor illness: e.g. limb, wound and cranial nerve examination skills b7 Patient documentation skills b7 Drug administration skills b7 Advanced airway management skills including endotracheal intubation b7 Capnography interpretation skills b7 Needle cricothyroidotomy b7 Needle thoracocentesis b7 Intravenous cannulation b7 Intraosseous access b7 Respiratory and cardiovascular examination skills b7 Resuscitation skills to Advanced Life Support level, including 12 lead ECG interpretation skills b7 Obstetric delivery and emergency action skills b7 Practice placement in appropriate clinical environment

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of the module the student should be able to: 1. Demonstrate the technical clinical skills required to treat a patient appropriately in a variety of settings, including emergency, urgent and routine situations. 2. Evaluate and apply evidence based approaches to history taking, assessment and examination skills. 3. Discuss and apply a range of protocols, clinical treatment and management strategies to safely and effectively manage patents 4. Evaluate and demonstrate application of evidence base practice and understanding of medico-legal issues regarding safe drug administration and patient report documentation. 5. Demonstrate application and understanding of non-technical skills related to clinical care and patient safety.

Teaching / Learning Strategy

Prior to attending the face to face practical sessions, a Flipped Classroom structure will be used to direct students to consider key evidence in relation to the practical sessions. Lecture material and resources will be posted on GCU learn. During the taught element of the module students will participate in interactive clinical simulation sessions which will encourage experiential learning through safe clinical simulation, role play and facilitated debriefing. Additional teaching strategies will include practical problem solving workshops delivered by tutorials designed to reinforce the application of clinical skills in relation to practice. The delivery of specific skill teaching will be facilitated using a deliberate practice and feedback structured interaction by the faculty teaching team. Practice placement in appropriate clinical areas will allow the student to demonstrate skills competency via logbook completion. Supervisor and mentor support will be provided in the clinical practice placement area.
