Summary of Content

This module will build and develop students' knowledge gained during the year 1 module, pathophysiology in pre-hospital care. Students will deepen their knowledge and understanding of human anatomy and physiology and pathophysiology. The course is designed to increase students' knowledge of physiological and developmental changes over the lifespan. Students will study and develop advanced knowledge of acute and chronic diseases, illness and dysfunction in the human body. This module will enable students to further develop their knowledge and skills in order to make safe and effective clinical judgements and provide clinical leadership and expertise in paramedic practice. Knowledge and understanding gained in this module will be practically demonstrated within the Advanced Clinical Skills and Patient Assessment and Management in Paramedic Practice modules.


The syllabus will introduce the student to advanced concepts of Pathophysiology pertaining to ambulance practice. Topics to be explored and assessed within this module include: Advanced anatomy and physiology e.g. -360b7 Cardiac conduction pathways -360b7 Structure and function of the larynx and upper airway. b7 Nervous control of cardiac and respiratory function. The structure, function and organisation of the human body as it applies to advanced ambulance practice. -360b7 ECG and cardiac function -360b7 Anatomical considerations in advanced airway support The Pathophysiology of these body systems including respiratory and cardiovascular emergencies and emergencies involved with paediatrics, obstetrics and trauma e.g. -360b7 Shock, types and manifestations -360b7 Changes in pregnancy b7 How paediatrics respond differently to shock Advanced pharmacology e.g. -360b7 Cardio active drugs -360b7 Thrombolysis b7 Respiratory medications

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module the student should be able to:1.Demonstrate an advanced knowledge of human anatomy and physiology across all age ranges including the integration between systems and their impact on maintaining homeostasis.2.Demonstrate a detailed knowledge of both acute and chronic pathophysiologys of the respiratory, cardiovascular, nervous, skeletal, endocrine and gastrointestinal systems throughout the human lifespan.3.Demonstrate advanced knowledge of illness and injury throughout the human lifespan in the context of acute illness and injury, common chronic illness, and minor injury. 4.Demonstrate an advanced level of knowledge of pharmacology, including pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetics in relation to both paramedic drugs and common medications prescribed to acute and chronic patients.

Teaching / Learning Strategy

The aim of this module is to equip students to systematically assess, analyse and evaluate the ill or injured patient and apply advanced theoretical principles of paramedic practice. This will be delivered by a combination of lectures, directed learning, tutorials, and independent studies as well as through practice placement. Lectures will provide the advanced knowledge for the module, and will be supplemented by small group activities, tutorials and independent studies to enhance learning. Core theory will be presented by paramedic education specialists and visiting medical specialists all of whom are experts in the topic areas. Simulation and scenario based activities will allow the transfer of knowledge and understanding as well as clinical problem solving skills into the practical environment.
