Summary of Content

The aim of this module is to comprehensively support healthcare workers undertaking assessment, management and evaluation of care for patients requiring musculoskeletal casting or splinting. This will include appraising a range of immobilisation options and determining the management implications based on individual patient's lifestyle and needs.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this module the student should be able to:1. Analyse contemporary legislation, guidelines, codes of practice, policies and evidence based relevant to the assessment and management including prevention of fractures and soft tissue injury2. Demonstrate non-discriminatory values when ascertaining from the patient the history and the mechanisms by which the injury was sustained 3. Utilise knowledge of normal and abnormal anatomy, physiology and pathophysiology of musculoskeletal injuries and conditions, including the implications for surrounding or underlying structures to assess, analyse and interpret the patients presenting and emerging condition.4. Utilise knowledge of the physiology of fracture and soft tissue healing, the factors that influence healing and the implications of immobilisation on healing to determine the various treatment / management options5. Utilise a person centred approach to discuss and agree / confirm patient's consent to their management / treatment option(s)6. Evaluate health and safety practices within the work environment to ensure maximise safety to self, colleagues and patients 7. Role model exemplary safe practice when handling equipment involved in the management of immobilisation8. Discuss with the patient the care, maintenance and management of the cast / splints plus mobility aids (crutches, walker) to maximise their effectiveness and minimise risk of further injury or complications9. Based on accumulative professional experience and an understanding of professional accountability alter or modify an aspect of the patient's care plan to enhance their ability to self-manage without compromising their injury and its healing 10. Reflect on personal contribution to the multidisciplinary team and recognise limitations by appropriately referring patients when care and treatment is outwith scope of practice or experience.11. Identify fracture or soft tissue related complications and emergencies then implement and evaluate the appropriate emergency measures12. Act within scope of professional practice and recognise the importance of maintaining and developing competence related to the immobilisation of fractures and soft tissue injuries 13. Audit local fracture / soft tissues services using national standards 14. Formulate a learning log to evidence clinical activity and advancement of cast and splinting related knowledge and skills including the analysis of casts and splint applications to confirm their quality

Teaching / Learning Strategy

This module can be delivered as either face to face or using a blended approach. Different combinations of lectures, seminars, tutorials, interactive discussions, workshops, directed and self-directed study will be utilised depending on where the 'blended' delivery is taking place e.g at a venue other than GCU The student will always obtain the equivalent of 108 hours of contact time with the module team, excluding individual academic support. The fundamental aim of the teaching and learning strategies, irrespective of delivery mode is to support the development of autonomous, independent problem solving and decision making within the parameters of their profession competence, role and employers agreed vicarious liability (or equivalent). The module places extensive emphasis on the practical application of cast and splint and is delivered on site at GCU and at a number of other venues in the UK. In addition to the contact time with the module team, students receive individual academic support.
