Summary of Content

This is a practice placement module. Students will develop their clinic skills in preparation for essential level practice which will include an interprofessional elective clinical placement. They will develop the skills of diagnosis and assessment in relevant podiatric and functional aspects of clinical conditions through practice and demonstration. The management of patients who present with a range of podiatric pathologies will be undertaken and theoretical aspects will be integrated through this module. Students will develop clinical treatment strategies, identify and treat basic structural and soft tissue pathologies within the foot and lower limb, implement basic principles of patient management and care planning, utilise evidence based assessment techniques, practice effective communication within the clinical team, learn to use basic clinical reasoning within the clinical environment and enhance their skills in reflective practice.

Syllabus

Clinical experience structured to level 2 studies in a range of clinical placements with emphasis on: -360b7 Development of inter-professional and inter-personal communication skills; empathy/sympathy; confidentiality; consent; compliance; recording and communicating medical data to third parties b7 Verbal and non- verbal communication skills to enhance history taking, information gathering, data recording and record keeping. b7 Understanding the need to respect, and so far as possible uphold,the rights, dignity, values and autonomy of every service user including their role in the diagnostic and therapeutic process and in maintaining health and wellbeing b7 Further enhancing their knowledge, understanding and application of decontamination and handwashing b7 Safely use a range of practical clinical skills and techniques within a clinical setting b7 Applying current infection control and health and safety principles within the clinical environment b7 Developing clinical reasoning skills to establish a diagnosis framework b7 Undertaking clinical assessment, investigation and management of patients with soft tissue and structural deformities of the foot and lower limb b7 Undertaking and recording a thorough, sensitive and detailed assessment, using appropriate techniques and equipment, undertaking or arranging investigations as appropriate and conducting neurological, vascular, biomechanical, dermatological and podiatric assessments -360b7 Recognising the need to plan, negotiate and deliver podiatric care b7 Discussing appropriate aetiologies, pathologies, pathomechanics and management strategies of a variety of structural and soft tissue disorders of the lower limb and foot b7 Discussing appropriate aetiologies and pathologies of relevant medical conditions, and their impact on the risk and management of the lower limb and foot b7 Being able to effectively prescribe, manufacture and evaluate a range of foot orthoses. b7 Developing time management skills in clinical practice Reflecting on clinical practice.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of the module the student should be able to:1. Demonstrate appropriate neurological, vascular, biomechanical, dermatological and podiatric assessment techniques within a clinical setting2. Practise within the legal and ethical boundaries of their profession3. Understand the need to act in the best interests of service users at all times, respecting their rights, dignity, values and autonomy4. Demonstrate basic clinical reasoning skills in identifying and treating structural and soft tissue pathologies5. Effectively utilise and reflect on clinical skills in podiatric practice6. Adopt a systematic approach to data collection and interpretation within an holistic framework of health and social care7. Practice skills in the recognition and treatment of structural and soft tissue foot pathologies8. Effectively utilise communication and interpersonal skills with patients and colleagues to ensure quality care9. Safely manage foot pathologies in patients with and without systemic risk10. Recognise basic risk factors relative to the lower limb and foot11. Apply and integrate knowledge and understanding of core theory to underpin the practice of podiatry
