Summary of Content

This module offers students preparing to commence university level study the opportunity to practice and develop key academic skills which will enable them to ultimately become more confident, independent learners and effective writers in an academic environment. Learners will be introduced to, and have the opportunity to practice, the fundamentals of (for example): Research: locating and selecting appropriate sources. Academic referencing: what it is and how to do it. Plagiarism: what it is and how to avoid it.

Syllabus

During this module the student will cover the following syllabus: Basic research and retrieval skills, identifying appropriate academic sources Paraphrasing and summarising skills, plagiarism avoidance strategies Fundamentals of academic referencing: integral and non-integral citations, incorporating quotations, compiling a reference list How to organise a piece of academic writing, with a focus on writing an effective introduction An introduction to the key principles of reflective writing

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of the module, students should be able to:1.Demonstrate an understanding of how to research effectively and incorporate sources into structured academic assignments.2.Reflect on their learning experience and produce an appropriate reflective, written academic assignment.

Teaching / Learning Strategy

This is a 10 credit module which will delivered in a blended learning format. This means that there will be 4 face to face teaching sessions as well as online learning environment. Students will be required to submit 4 individual tasks and a final extended essay, cumulatively forming a portfolio of work. Students will also receive ongoing support and guidance from an ADT (academic development tutor) in fulfilling their portfolio work.

Transferrable Skills

The key transferable skills developed in this module are oral and written communication, use of information technology, evaluation and creative problem solving skills. Information technology skills will be developed through Internet searches and online communication. Analytical, evaluative and creative problem solving will be developed throughout the module experience but especially through the variety of task-based assessments the students will encounter.
