Pre-Requisite Knowledge

The learner must be employed in a full-time, part-time or voluntary capacity. This module is intended for students undertaking the BSc Railway Operations Management programme.

Summary of Content

The aim of this module is to provide the necessary knowledge and skills to function effectively as a middle manager or a potential middle manager in the railway industry, where the industry is understood as the train operating companies, Network Rail and associated regulatory bodies.


The following key areas will be considered: - Written communication - Oral communication - Effective dialogue - Effective presentation - Critical analysis

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of the module the student should be able to:1. Summarise and analyse standard industry documents relevant to rail operations2. Construct complex documents relevant to middle management in rail operations3. Construct a document that requires the use of statistical data and text to win support for a proposal relevant to thestudent's employing organisation.

Teaching / Learning Strategy

It is intended that the programme is delivered through Blackboard, GCU's on-line learning environment. Students will be expected to participate in a range of e-learning activities including individual and group work, and where appropriate self- and peer assessment. Formative assessment will be used to encourage learning and interpersonal skills, and the summative assessments will provide evidence of the development achieved throughout the module. Assessments are designed in order to allow students to integrate the academic knowledge gained on the programme with practical problems they encounter in the workplace.
