Summary of Content

An introduction to low rise building construction including services.


Construction: Introduction to: site investigation; site appraisal and temporary services; foundation types and underbuilding construction; loadbearing and non-loadbearing masonry; timber framed walls; wall and floor finishes; floor construction; timber flat and pitched roofs and roof coverings; window and door openings including construction; electrical supply and distribution; mains cold water and hot water supply systems; above and below ground drainage for rainwater and foul systems; low pressure hot water heating systems; simple ventilation extract systems; functional and legislative requirements; specification writing including use of National Building Specification (NBS) and Co-ordinated Project Information (CPI); interpretation and presentation of construction and services drawings

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this module, the student should be able to:Identify the external and internal components of a low rise building, including the services elements and apply construction principles to produce basic design concepts and construction detailsInterpret construction and services drawings

Teaching / Learning Strategy

Construction: Lectures will provide the basic theoretical concepts of building construction and services and will complemented by structured tutorials and the use of audio/visual publications to reinforce principles outlined in the formal lecture programme. Additionally, library and information facilities will be available at GCU, offering various multi-media options to acquire technical references and associated references. Other source references will be outlined as the module syllabus is delivered.
