Summary of Content

The aim of this laboratory course is to develop an understanding about the electronic devices by performing laboratory experiments relevant to Electronic Engineering which helps them to develop practical skills. The students acquire practical knowledge about the characteristics and operation of electronic devices.


The laboratory syllabus will cover the following areas: VI characteristics of semiconductor diodes. DC power supply with and without filters. Diode applications- diode limiters, clamping and multipliers. Bipolar junction transistor characteristics. Bipolar junction transistor applications. Junction Field Effect transistor characteristics. Unipolar junction transistor characteristics. Silicon Controlled Rectifier characteristics. Photodiode characteristics.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this course the student should be able to:1. Examine the characteristics of a Diode, Bipolar Junction Transistor, Field Effect Transistor, Silicon Controller Rectifier and Photodiode. (AM1,AM4)2. Design rectifier circuits and test their performance. (AM1,AM4)3. Design and test diode application circuits such as clipper and clamper. (AM1,AM4)4. Design and test transistor application circuits.(AM1,AM4)

Teaching / Learning Strategy

The main teaching method will be based on laboratory exercises used to relate theoretical concepts to practical experience.

Transferrable Skills

The laboratory sessions provide the opportunity for students to further demonstrate and apply knowledge, exercise independent thought, creativity and design appraisal. The student's interpersonal/team skills and practical skills are further exercised with group work and reports.
