Summary of Content

This module consists of an introductory project. This is followed by exposing students to fundamental practical workshop skills in mechanical, electrical and electronic engineering along with practical programming skills as appropriate. These skills are used for the main design and build project. The student through the process of personal development planning will also have the opportunity to identify learning needs and record the acquisition of a range of key skills. The percentage of Work Based Learning for this module, as represented by the Independent Learning "Activity Type", is 73%. The percentage of Work Based Assessment for this module is 100%.


Workshop Skills: PIC/Arduino programming, design and build electronic circuits on breadboard and pcb, turning, welding, fabrication, vacuum forming & metrology. These workshop sessions may change to suit the employer of the particular apprentice. CAD/CAM: State of the art CAD/CAM techniques using software at the cutting edge including solid modelling techniques allied with introductory stress and finite element analysis as part of a rapid-prototyping scenario. Data Analysis: Use of current software packages for analysing data and mathematical modelling. Project: The students will be given a design brief and asked to design and build a working prototype.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module the student should be able to: Design and build simple engineering models.Maintain a log book of activities and develop communication skills via engineering sketches.Communicate design using Computer-Aided Design (CAD).Demonstrate an understanding of the nature of team working and the relevant issues.Demonstrate an understanding of project management.Show an understanding of basic engineering workshop skills and practice (Fabrication, Welding, Metrology, Turning, Vacuum Forming, Soldering and Arduino Programming).Deliver an oral presentation on the project.

Teaching / Learning Strategy

Work Based Education aims to maximise the direct and digitally mediated contact time with students by practicing teaching and learning strategies that use authentic work based scenarios and encourage action learning, enquiry based learning, problem based learning and peer learning. All these approaches aim to directly involve the students in the process of learning and to encourage sharing or learning between students. The module team will determine the level and accuracy of knowledge acquisition at key points in the delivery, inputting when necessary either directly or with the support of external experts who will add to the authenticity , the credibility and applications of the education and learning to the workplace. The engineering workshop skills required will be negotiated with the employer and outlined in the student's Individual Learning and Training Plan. The students will be encouraged to reflect upon the theoretical learning within the work place and the application of newly learned concepts to the work environment.
