### Summary of Content

This module is designed to provide a good depth of knowledge in the basic concepts of structural mechanics and dynamics. A general approach is used in order to provide the prior learning necessary to study the more specialised engineering subjects in levels 2 and above.

### Syllabus

Structural mechanics Resolution of coplanar forces; equilibrium; taking moments about a point; determinate and indeterminate structures; pin-jointed plane frames (joint resolution and method of sections); direct, bending and torsional stress; combined stresses; shear force and bending moment diagrams; elastic limits and plastic failure. Dynamics Kinematics; linear/angular motion; accelerating forces; torque; centrifugal forces, momentum and impulse; simple vibrations.

### Learning Outcomes

On successfull completion of this module the students should be able to:1- Understand the significance of structural integrity and identify the relevant factors such as yielding, buckling, fatigue and natural frequency. (A1, A2)2- Identify statically determinate and indeterminate structures. (A2, B1)3- Determine by analysis the forces in statically determinate structural elements including frames using equilibrium theories for coplanar forces. (B2, B5, C1)4- Identify the stresses acting structural elements subject to axial loads and bending moments and compare to stress capacity of various structural materials including elastic limits and plastic failure. (A2, B1, B2, B5, C1)5- Assess the deflections in simply supported beams. (A1, A2, B2)6- Understand the principles of dynamics as kinematics and kinetics. (A2)7- Determine the required parameters for simple dynamic systems. (A2, B1)8- Identify vibration in mechanical systems. (A2, B1)

### Teaching / Learning Strategy

This module includes a variety of teaching and learning methods including lectures, seminars, tutorials and laboratory experiments. A core text book will be used to aid the learning of the subject and to be of use in subjects covered in level 2 and above. Learning and teaching strategies will be developed and implemented, appropriate to students' needs, to enable all students to participate fully in the programme.
