Summary of Content

The focused ultrasound competency based CPD course is designed to, -510b7 culminate in a GCU CASE accredited award of 'Certificate of Competence to Practice Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm Ultrasound Screening' -510b7 be predominantly work-based within a recognised placement under the supervision of a named AAA screening mentor b7 be assessed through a practice based appraisal undertaken by a nominated external assessor (who will usually be the trainee's mentor) -510b7 include a two day workshop comprising key note lectures and practical sessions using AAAS equipment to meet the learning outcomes. -510b7 offer distance learning support including key note lectures and directed learning tasks delivered through the university's virtual learning environment (VLE) GCU Learn b7 enable experienced route trainees to be credited with prior Ultrasound learning appropriately -510b7 provide flexible training routes to meet service requirements . -510

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this module the student should be able to:-1. apply physical and safety principles in order to identify, select and manipulate equipment appropriately for an ultrasound examination in order to accurately identify and measure the abdominal aorta and any aneurysm present.2. competently and safely undertake focused real-time ultrasound examinations for AAA screening as appropriate to the evidence base and the screening programme protocols.3. acquire and archive appropriate images of the abdominal aorta and its measurements as appropriate to the screening programme protocol criteria.4. evaluate the ultrasound findings and communicate effectively as dictated by national protocol (verbal to screening attendees and written format on system).5. critically reflect on own learning and professional development.

Teaching / Learning Strategy

The teaching and learning strategy involves a range of student-centred, blended learning methods. These include key note lectures, tutorials, clicker quizzes, directed and self-directed study, group work, clinical simulation, clinical supervision and practice based learning. Peer support will also be provided through the wider student group. Practice based learning is an integral part of the module and will take place at the students' workplace or placement site. All students must therefore, have access to a suitable clinical placement and clinical mentor who has the necessary skills and experience to assess final competence in Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm screening. The Portfolio will be utilised as a learning tool throughout the course, enabling the student to evidence clinical competency and providing a vehicle for continuing development.
