Available to health care staff with an interest in the area and access to AAA National Screening lists and equipment and a suitable workplace mentor.

Summary of Content

-107 The CPD course is designed to ensure clinical competency in focussed ultrasound of screening the abdominal aorta by delivering the theoretical underpinning whilst students engage in practice concurrently, thus facilitating the application of theoretical principles to practice. The clinical education element of the programme requires the student to be able to have regular access to ultrasound placement, with the support of an appropriate mentor (this is not provided by GCU). Evidence of this is required prior to entry The course is designed to, -510b7 culminate in a GCU CASE accredited award of 'Certificate of Competence to Practice Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm Ultrasound Screening' -510b7 be predominantly work-based within a recognised placement under the supervision of a named mentor b7 be assessed through a practice based appraisal undertaken by a nominated external assessor (who will usually be the trainee's mentor) b7 include a two day workshop comprising key note lectures and practical sessions using state of the art equipment to meet the learning outcomes. b7 offer distance learning support including key note lectures and directed learning tasks delivered through the university's virtual learning environment (VLE) GCU Learn provide flexible training routes to meet service requirements

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of the course which includes clinical assessments, you will be able to:- " apply physical and safety principles in order to identify, select and manipulate equipment appropriately for an ultrasound examination in order to accurately identify and measure the abdominal aorta and any aneurysm present " competently and safely undertake focused real-time ultrasound examinations for AAA screening as appropriate to the evidence base and the screening programme protocols " acquire and archive appropriate images of the abdominal aorta and its measurements as appropriate to the screening programme protocol criteria " evaluate the ultrasound findings and communicate effectively as dictated by national protocol (verbal to screening attendees and written format on system).

Teaching / Learning Strategy

Learning strategies will range from key note lectures and blended learning resources which will provide theoretical underpinning to practice based tutorials which will consolidate learning and rehearse practical skills. Clinical based learning, an intrinsic part of the module, will take place at the students' placements where individual tutorials led by the clinical teams, based on the workload referrals, will encourage problem solving and reflective practice. Where it is identified in the placement unit, through learning objectives and feedback, that the student's contact with more complex pathologies is limited, clinical experience in these areas will be supplemented normally by a placement in an alternative centre with a wider range of procedures and examinations. Emphasis is placed on the student achieving autonomy, competent to carry out focussed ultrasound of the Abdominal Aorta. Enabling strategies in the clinical placement will reflect this approach. The virtual e-learning environment - GCU Learn- offers a forum for exchange of information and ideas among participants with the intention of broadening their learning experience and encouraging students to become autonomous, reflective learners who assume responsibility for their learning to achieve clinical competency. The Professional Portfolio will be utilised as a learning tool throughout the course, enabling the student to evidence clinical competency and providing a vehicle for continuing development.
