Summary of Content

This module will give students the opportunity to apply theoretical knowledge and gain practical skills in relation to skeletal radiography with a particular focus on upper limb, lower limb, chest, and abdomen. Experience will be gained in the placement and simulated learning environment. There will be a focus on image appraisal of normal images.

Syllabus

Orientation to the diagnostic imaging department and team Radiographic positioning and conventional technique for imaging of the skeleton, thoracic and abdominal viscera. Appraisal of the radiographic image Safe and efficient working with particular attention to radiation protection, communication and patient care (infection control, CPR, MH) IR(MER) regulations, health and safety and QA procedures, COSSH Introduction to conventional imaging equipment Digital radiographic image acquisition, processing and manipulation Introduction to patient electronic records & PACS Positive living and self care Personal development planning and reflective writing Introduction to key pathologies. Experience of ancillary clinical departments Perception of patient feelings and behaviours - sympathy, empathy, anxiety and fear

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module the student should be able to:1. Perform safely and efficiently routine conventional imaging procedures of the upper limb, lower limb, chest, and abdomen.2. Appraise resultant images using the appropriate criteria3. Demonstrate appropriate profession specific communication skills and patient care4. Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the patient's journey throughout the diagnostic imaging department5. Demonstrate effective operation of conventional imaging equipment6. Participate in relevant quality assurance7. Engage in reflection in relation to professional practice8. Demonstrate the need for a range of appropriate principles, legislation and techniques to maintain a safe practice enviroment

Teaching / Learning Strategy

Within the academic environment, keynote lectures and tutorials will introduce and reinforce essential content. There will be an emphasis on active student participation in developing practical skills. Demonstrations, role play e.g. using SMOT cameras, group work, e-learning eg. Shaderware and personal development planning will be employed. Experience in the placement environment will be included to allow students real life learning opportunities working with patients and practitioners. Bespoke timetabling provides a full range of placement experiences consistent with the curriculum at this level.

Transferrable Skills

This module aims to introduce and develop interpersonal communication skills, team working skills and problem solving skills. Confidence as independent learners will be augmented. Clinical reasoning skills will be introduced at a foundation level. Contextual awareness of positive living and self care.
