Summary of Content

This practice learning module for all 4 fields of practice consists of an 8 week (300 hours) practice learning experience. Foundation level nursing care will be practised along with development of evidence based practice. Theoretical concepts will be applied to practice to develop knowledge and understanding. Students will be offered flexibility in the choice of timing of the placement where possible during Trimester C. The type of PLE is identified within the Scottish OAR for each individual field. The module provides students with the opportunity to develop further professional skills for nursing practice within the four NMC domains.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module students should be able to:1. Demonstrate, with structured support, the relevant and essential skills which strengthen the professional values of safe nursing practice 2. Display the appropriate communication and interpersonal skills that demonstrate safe nursing practice 3. Reflect on own leadership skills and their development in relation to nursing practice 4. With structured support, demonstrate the skills required for safe nursing practice and decision making across the lifespan5. Demonstrate achievement of the requirements for part 1 of the NMC (2010) Standards for Nurse Education

Teaching / Learning Strategy

Students will be supported and supervised in practice by a qualified mentor in the Practice Learning Experience (PLE). Students will work with a qualified mentor with whom they will work at least 40% of the time to develop their professional skills in practice. Assessment will take place within the PLE and undertaken by the mentor. Formative assessment of practice using Practice Grading Criteria Summative assessment of practice using Practice Grading Criteria and completion of Progression Point 1 (Scottish OAR)
