Summary of Content

This module aims to introduce you to concepts relating to human movement, anatomy and assessment. It focuses on equipping you with the required knowledge and skills to conduct, interpret and record a standardised objective physiotherapy examination of the spine, neurological system, cardiovascular system and respiratory system. The module also aims to introduce you to the key knowledge and skills relating to conducting an effective subjective examination. You will be introduced to the anatomical basis of human movement relating structure to function of lumbar, thoracic and cervical spine, peripheral nerves, cardiac and vascular system, respiratory system and development of manual skills (e.g. neurodynamic testing, pulses, auscultation, respiratory and heart rate) required to test individual anatomical structures. Measurement, communication and health and safety considerations are introduced as essential components of client examination.

Syllabus

An overview of spinal bones, joints, neural and vascular structures their general functions. A basic introduction to cardiovascular and respiratory systems Types of movements and requirements for normal movement. Classifications of spinal joints, structure and function of their constituent parts. Performing passive physiological and accessory movements through full available range of movement Concepts of end feel, capsular pattern and close packed positions. Position, origin, insertion and actions of spinal muscles. Analysing movement terminology. Performing manual assessment of muscle strength and length including static and dynamic contractions and passive longitudinal stretching. Anatomy of spinal/peripheral nerves and main neural plexuses. Course of main peripheral nerves. Performing neurodynamic testing. Palpating pulses Performing a standardized basic objective examination of spine, respiratory and cardiovascular system. Instructing and analysing active movements. Performing spinal accessory movements Role of subjective examination in gathering client data. Standardised structure of general subjective examination. Performing a standardized subjective examination. Facets of communication that enhance client interactions. Informed consent. Medico-legal aspects of recording client data. Recording client data. Health and safety issues relating to manual handling of clients.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of the module students should be able to:1. Analyse and explain the function of anatomical structures (heart, lungs, neural and vascular structures) in relation to movement and normal function 2. Apply appropriate palpation skills to assist safe performance of manual techniques and test specific anatomical structures3. Apply effective communication skills necessary to complete a standardised patient examination 4. Interpret and explain the findings of an objective examination from an anatomical perspective.5. Conduct a safe standardised subjective examination 6. Interpret and record the findings of a subjective examination from an anatomical perspective.

Teaching / Learning Strategy

A variety of blended learning and teaching strategies will be used to encourage active student engagement and to foster independent learning. The use of podcasts and lectures will direct students to relevant theory for practical classes which will utilise a mix of paper-based and electronic books. Most of the face to face contact will utilise task-oriented role play and pair/group work while students practice skills on each other. Peer-led workshops will be utilised to contextualise and deepen learning. Issues relating to equality, diversity, age and breadth of practice will be introduced through such case scenarios. The GCU Learn VLE will be used as a medium for providing with/directing students to additional learning materials and activities to encourage and enhance their independent learning. Links to appropriate online materials will also be utilised. On-going formative feedback from tutors and peers using GCU's feedback principles will be utilised throughout the module, particularly during all practical classes. Self-assessment questions relating to weekly objectives will be utilised to facilitate independent learning and achievement of objectives.
