Summary of Content

This module introduces students to key theoretical concepts and risk management processes and practices. It will provide students with a thorough understanding of current thinking on risk management strategy, culture, operations and consider cutting edge risk issues. Examining throughout the role these play in building organisational resilience.

Syllabus

Introduction to risk and resilience Principles and aims of risk management including risk and opportunity Understanding emerging risks and risk intelligence Risk management standards Risk architecture, strategy and protocols Enterprise risk management Risk assessment, risk appetite and risk assurance Risk culture Risk perception and risk taking behavior Reputation risk Project risk management Organisational resilience: a coordinated approach The syllabus is placed in the context of current risk issues throughout delivery, for example those highlighted in the WEF's annual global risk report including cyber and technology risk, climate change, terrorism, political risk, and many others.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this module, the student should be able to:1. Critically examine the meaning of risk and the role of risk management in international organisations.2. Discuss the principles, practice and process of implementing risk management and demonstrate an awareness of relevant standards3. Discuss and evaluate the use of an enterprise-wide approach to risk management in developing resilient international business organisations and the importance of creating a risk-aware culture;4. Critically analyse the role and meaning of risk architecture, strategy and protocols

Teaching / Learning Strategy

The lectures will be supported by a programme of directed reading and structured exercises. In addition guest speakers will be used to enhance the knowledge base of the students and provide them with real world context. The teaching strategy encourages the students to question, debate and critically analyse current issues relating to risk and resilience. Organisational case studies are utilized throughout the module for this purpose. This will allow students to develop and present their own knowledge and understanding of key issues, meet the challenge of contributing meaningfully to the learning outcomes; and enhance their confidence and responsibility in line with Common Good attributes. These principles are also evident in the responsible leadership ethos of the module whereby students are able to discuss relevant case studies and develop solutions to risk related issues in an ethical, sustainable and professional manner. Distance learning students access the same resources as on-campus. All students are provided with lecture slides, lecture notes and additional reading all of which is available online. GCU Learn is used in this way as a repository, to provide students with essential learning material. It is also used as a platform for student discussion around the weekly seminar topics. Using Padlet, wikis and blogs both on-campus and distance students will have the opportunity to engage with each other and discuss the weekly lecture topics online. In additional Collaborate Ultra is utilised to provide students with synchronous learning opportunities and provide more directed support throughout the module. Students are provided with formative and summative feedback via a variety of mechanisms. Feedback on coursework is provided within 3 working weeks of submission.

Transferrable Skills
