Learning Outcomes
On completion of this module, students will be able to demonstrate: A critical and reflexive understanding of the epistemological basis to sampling and analysis in qualitative research including the use of documentary sources The ability to apply advanced practical research skills associated with qualitative methods including indepth interviewing, participant observation, focus groups and the use of video The ability to critcally analyse qualitative data using a number of methods including conversational and discourse analysis, content analysis, thematic charting and the use of computer software for analysing qualitative data. Write up the findings from research using qualitative methods
Teaching / Learning Strategy
A series of lecturers, seminars, labs, workshops and directed readings will be used to introduce core themes and issues on sampling, recruitment, data collection, analysis and writing up. Introductory lectures will form the basis to these topics. Further, through a series of workshops and labs the process of data analysis will be introduced. Directed reading will include journal articles reporting relevant contemporary research. In workshops students working in pairs or small groups, will undertake qualitative interviewing and present their analysis of qualitative data. Students will also gain practical experience of collecting data using video, participant observation and focus groups. Software will be introduced as appropriate. Students will be expected to undertake an analysis of data in a small group, write a short report on the process and findings and present this at a seminar.
