Pre-Requisite Knowledge
Students must have passed the Research and Project Methods Module or an equivalent postgraduate module. A compensation in this module(or equivalent) is not deemed to be a pass.
Summary of Content
The Project acts as a vehicle for extending the knowledge and understanding of the student and the technical community in some specialist technical area. It serves, through its length, complexity and rigour, as a suitable vehicle for extending, in the student, a range of personal, interpersonal and communication skills. In addition, it serves to develop and extend a range of high-level "thinking" skills, including analysing and synthesising skills and affords the opportunity for the student to demonstrate initiative and creativity in a major piece of technological work.
Syllabus
Not applicable. However, project must be a suitable vehicle for satisfying all learning outcomes detailed. The student will be expected to follow the project plan laid out in his/her proposal which was undertaken and assessed as part of Research & Project Methods module. This will be the basis of the Project, but may be modified on the advice of and with the agreeement of the supervisors.
Learning Outcomes
On completion of the module, the student should be able to:i) Enhance their ability to autonomously analyse, synthesise, diagnose, plan, execute and evaluate at an advanced level.ii) Gather and critically analyse, previous literature relating to the chosen area of study towards contexturalising and integrating the study into the continuing development of knowledge and understanding in the areaiii) Render progress explicit and manage resources effectively on a major piece of work of significant duration, to meet deliverables on time and in budgetiv) Communicate effectively through oral, written, graphical and listening skills a complex technological piece of work of significant durationv) Determine and display the appropriate balance between critical, analytic thinking and creative synthetic thinkingvi) Marshall a range oftransferable and technical skills towards the planning and execution of a significant relevant project of research investigation or development.
Teaching / Learning Strategy
Directed learning, mentoring, independent learning. The student will be allocated a supervisor to provide advice and guidance with regards to administrative, procedural and approach issues. The student will receive a Project Handbook. Additional directed reading may be provided by the project supervisor as deemed appropriate. A series of workshops will be given to enahnce the students research skills.
