Summary of Content

This module aims to appeal to a wide range of professionals working in the field of cancer/oncology to provide them with an opportunity to advance their practice and develop their roles. The content aims to provide students with a critical understanding of the pathological mechanisms and management of malignant disease with particular focus on a range of common tumours. Holistic care and advanced communication is encompassed with consideration to inequalities in cancer care and Multi-disciplinary working.


-360a7 Pathological factors relating to malignant disease with particular reference to lung, breast, prostate and colorectal cancers and the management of these tumour types including: -360-1 o Epidemiology-3 -360 o Aetiology-6 -360-1 o Pathology/histology -360 o Signs-3 -1 and Symptoms -360 o Spread -360-1 o Investigations and differential diagnoses -360 o Staging-4 -1 and-4 -1 Grading -360-1 o Treatment-5 Options -360 o Potential-5 -1 complications-4 and-1 care-2 -1 of-3 the-4 -1 patient -360-1 o Prognosis -360a7 Cancer as an acute versus chronic condition a7 Specific of diagnosis and screening a7 Cancer survivorship and supported self-management a7 Person-centred care a7 Advanced communication skills in cancer care. a7 Pillars of advanced practice a7 Inequalities in cancer care a7 Legal and ethical considerations -360a7 Care and support of the patient with cancer when a cure is not available.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this module the student should be able to:1. Critically appraise and evaluate the medico-legal and ethical literature surrounding the responsibilities associated with advanced healthcare practice.2. Critically reflect on a range of professional roles across all areas of cancer care.3. Demonstrate critical awareness of strategies to increase cancer screening uptake and improve early diagnosis.4. Differentiate and draw reasoned conclusions from investigation findings and subsequent management, in a range of common cancers.5. Critically appraise and evaluate own practice and the role of an advanced practitioner in relation to patient care.6. Evaluate the role of the advanced healthcare practitioner in supporting and encouraging rehabilitation and prehabilitation in cancer care.7. Synthesise the literature relating to advanced practice and supported self-management and evaluate in the context of cancer care.

Teaching / Learning Strategy

This module is a blended learning module which will be delivered over 2 trimesters. The m odule content and format are designed to encourage the student to optimise opportunities to apply theory to practice. The use of interactive, multimedia educational technology is expected to facilitate the development and enhancement of transferrable practical, analytical, and information technology-literacy skills. The module content will actively promote the development of a critical, analytical and reflective approach to professional practice. The blended approach will enable the healthcare practitioners from remote and rural NHS Health board areas, to access this module. This also allows healthcare practitioners from the UK and beyond to access this course. T he face-to-face element of this module will be delivered in two blocks each comprising of 3 days. One block per trimester. The following teaching and learning strategy will comprise of: Lectures, modified lectures, small group tutorials, case studies, videos, participation in on-campus class discussions and debates, participation in real-time synchronous discussions using innovative technology when off campus, online directed learning resources and self-directed study . There will be online facilitation to encourage the students to network and collaborate with their peers as well as promoting independent learning.
