Summary of Content
This module is designed to develop students' knowledge in advanced techniques and technologies that are commonly used in acoustic modelling and spatial audio applications. With regard to acoustic modelling the module introduces the theoretical basis for modelling packages allying this to current uses within industry. The students will have an opportunity to compare the results of acoustic models with that of actual test results made in a student led measurement process. Spatial audio plays an ever increasing part of the audio experience in many areas including film, TV and games. The module explores the developments in spatial audio recording, production and reproduction. Finally, students are given the opportunity to put into practice the techniques and technologies used in current spatial audio development.
Syllabus
Room measurement: current systems, measurement metrics. Software Evaluation: room reverberation measurement, frequency response measurement. Room modelling: ray tracing, MISM, cone tracing, room model mapping, room auralisation. Psychoacoustics of spatial audio: Localisation, HRTF, stereo applications, matrix systems, discrete systems. Spatial Recording Techniques: Spatial sound recording systems, binaural recording, transaural reproduction, mid-side, Ambisonics, discrete arrays. Spatial audio delivery techniques: current technologies e.g. Dolby Atmos, DTS-X, Auromax object based audio.
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the students should be able to:1- measure the acoustic properties of rooms using industry standard techniques;2- apply advanced tools to model the acoustics of rooms and evaluate models against measured values;3- describe the principles and practice of spatial audio capture and delivery;4- produce spatial audio content for a variety of contexts.
Teaching / Learning Strategy
The University 'Strategy for Learning' documentation has informed the learning and teaching strategy for this module. Lectures will cover the theretical principles underpinning the module referring to case studies where approrpriate. Directed learning activities will be used to allow students to explore the underpinning technologies and techniques in greater depth at their own pace. Practical exercises will take place to provide opportunities for students to explore technologies in a real world environment increasing their employability.
