Summary of Content

The underlying philosophy of this module is to take a critical in-depth view of the techniques to develop in the student, (1) the ability to select, develop and plan a research project; (1) to research and critically analyse the literature associated with the project; and to present research findings effectively;(2) the ability to apply a competent process of thinking to project planning. Syllabus

The teaching syllabus will cover the following areas: Searching: techniques to carry out literature survey; computer searches; role of supervisors and librarian. Thinking and Analysing: Analysis of processes associated with good thinking to include using evidence skilfully and impartially; looking for unusual approaches to complex Instrumentation and Control problems.; understanding the differences among conclusions, assumptions and hypotheses. Presentation of Research Findings: Oral presentation techniques; poster presentation techniques and written presentation techniques; structure, style and content. Planning and Running a Project: Tools for planning, monitoring and control. Organising and managing Instrumentation and Control projects. Safe and Ethical working. The background to and frameworks for Health and Safety. Accidents statistics. Current legislation and use of databases and websites to identify it. Management of Health and Safety. Hazard Analysis and HAZOP techniques. Risk assessment and evaluation. Key elements of Safe Working. Case studies of real accidents. The relationship between ethics and the workplace. Key principles of ethically sound work. Good practice and professional codes of conduct.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module the student should be able to:1. Search and critically analyse relevant Instrumentation and Control literature.2. Think critically, effectively and efficiently about their work and the reported work of others .3. Plan and manage projects within the time and resource constraints imposed.4. Have a comprehensive awareness of the role and importance of safety in Instrumentation and Control plant operationsand the workplace.5. Develop promote and apply safe and ethical systems of work through a fundamental understanding of the ethical andsafetyrequirements which should be fulfilled with Instrumentation and Control in the workplace.6. Solve problems related to the safety of relevant real Instrumentation and Control systems and critically evaluate thesolutions.

Teaching / Learning Strategy

In line with University Strategy for Learning. To support the student learning experience this module 's lectures and seminars are carefully structured to present a consistent and logical progression of issues and concepts. Students are provided with formative and summative feedback via a variety of mechanisms. Feedback on coursework is provided within 3 working weeks of submission providing information on strengths, weaknesses and suggestions for corrective action. Full time and Part Time students: A combination of lectures, seminars and practical's will be complemented by a substantial element of student-centred learning techniques, projects and case studies. The teaching will comprise an intensive five day programme followed by consolidation seminars. The full time students will be supported using GCU Learn. Legislation on Health and Safety and will be accessed via the databases that the University subscribes to e.g. OHSIS via Athens. Distance learning students. A study pack is provided including; lecture notes, tutorial notes, case studies and worked examples which will also be available on GCU Learn. Tutors are available for consultation via GCU Learn, e-mail, Skype and telephone. Guest tutors will be used to provide current specialist knowledge. The assessments are designed to expose the students to real world problems from international examples of engineering problems that can be solved using the relevant analysis method, preparing them for their practice of this method in employment. At all stages, the importance of validating their results is emphasised to reinforce the importance of professional responsibility in ensuring that only valid assumptions and results are presented. Feedback on assessments will be provided electronically through GCU Learn or by the email facility.
