Summary of Content

The aim of this module is to allow you to gain knowledge and understanding of analysis and design of complex structural systems in steel and reinforced concrete based on the British specifications and Euro codes

Syllabus

The teaching syllabus will cover the following areas: Design of Composite members in two materials Design of water retaining and earth retaining structures Design of Combined Footings and Raft Foundations Design of pile foundation with pile cap Introduction to design of domes, shells, flat and circular slabs

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module the student should be able to:Gain extensive knowledge and understanding of a wide range of civil engineering materials and components to produce solutions to problems through the application of fundamental concepts, principals and theories related to civil engineering including structural engineering, water engineering and geotechinics. [A1,D1]Demonstrate design methodologies related to civil engineering projects where an integrated approach is required. [A1, D4]Assess appropriate computer based methods for modeling and analyzing engineering problems [B1]Generate ideas and design new structures or processes from those already in existence [C1, D2]Plan and execute practical or simulated tests of design solutions and present a report containing critical analysis of the results and recommendations of actions for redesign and development [C1,D7, D6]Analyze and present the ethical issues including environmental impact of a particular situation relating to civil engineering design. [B3]

Teaching / Learning Strategy

The main teaching method will be based on lectures with filed visits to relate theoretical concepts to practical experience. The students will be expected to perform directed reading exercises and self-learning exercises on emerging technologies. Tutorials will be used to reinforce the module material discussed during lecture sessions. Tutorials also serve as a platform of technical discussions to clarify any queries that arise from directed studies .
