Summary of Content

This module provides the student with advanced character animation skills in order that they are able to design, develop and realise a short animated sequence which accurately reflects convincing character motion. Students will study rigging and skinning deformable characters and defining accurate weight maps. Animation hierarchies. The fundamental principles of animation including Squash and Stretch, Anticipation, Staging, Timing, Exaggeration, Secondary Action and Appeal. Students will also examine non dynamic simulations animation techniques and the application of laws of physics and dynamics.

Syllabus

The syllabus will cover the following areas:- Character rigging and skinning. Managing weight maps for skinned characters Volume preservation Reinforcing key principles of animation Apply Motion capture data for character animation. Lip syncing techniques. Key Frame animation techniques. Motion mixing and non-linear animation editing. Separating animation schene in to layers and outputting render passes with appropriate AOVs

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module, students should be able to:Demonstrate an understanding of relevant current industry practice with regard to animation production workflow. Evaluate the important principles of weight and motion with respect to character animation and apply them effectively.Apply appropriate character animation techniques to accurately synthesise a convincing 3D computer animation of an organic based character.Demonstrate an understanding of the skills and techniques required when creating a deformable 3D character based animated sequence.Research and develop an appropriate solution to a design brief including, design of a character asset for use within a typical industry animation pipeline for compositing.

Teaching / Learning Strategy

The University 'Strategy for Learning' documentation has informed the learning and teaching strategy for this module. The course will be presented as a programme of lectures supported by tutorials and associated practical lab work. Students are directed to planning skills throughout the course, further enhance their creative and technical skills through practise and improve communication skills through oral presentations, group based discussions and critique sessions. Tutorials and laboratory exercises will help students develop their technical skills using industry standard tools and improve techniques through practise. Will further explain, elaborate and put in to practise certain concepts covered in the lecture material. Lectures, lab exercises and video tutorials will be made available for the students on GCU Learn. Additional online digital video material will enhance support via GCU Learn and encourage flexible student learning and encourage students to engage with alternative digital resources. Student will receive formative feedback throughout the programme, further feedback and grades will be provided for the coursework assignment undertaken as part of the module.
