Summary of Content

The module will cover the following areas: The appraisal of techniques applied to building energy use. Solar engineering and issues of solar design for buildings. Air infiltration, air leakage and its measurement. Air conditioning/refrigeration systems and summer/winter cycles. Sick building syndrome and building related illness. Environmental noise including road, rail, aircraft noise, industrial and construction sites. The Noise at Work Regulations. Also, the application of computer aided design to an environmental design


The assessment of energy use in buildings using the concept of degree days and overall building energy design. Infra-red thermography as a tool for surveying aspects of building thermal performance. The application of energy auditing methodologies. Natural ventilation and the decay equations, infiltration, air leakage and its measurement. The availability and use of solar energy and issues relating to the solar design of buildings including active and passive approaches. Low energy building design techniques. The relationship between human comfort and environmental conditions. Refrigeration and air conditioning systems including summer/winter operational cycles and the operation of heat pumps. The investigation and mitigation of sick building syndrome and other building related illnesses. The measurement of external noise due to industrial and construction sites and the use of Leq, Lmax, L10, L90 for nuisance noise measurement including road,rail, traffic and aircraft noise. The Noise at Work Regulations in relation to construction sites.

Teaching / Learning Strategy

Learning and teaching strategies will be developed and implemented,appropriate to students' needs, to enable all students to participate full in the module. Lectures provide the theoretical knowledge and concepts that are complimented through the application of appropriate computer packages. The ability to draw conclusions from collected data will be obtained through practical demonstration of equipment/analysis techniques and through computer and laboratory tasks. Project assignments allow the students to apply their understanding within a meaningful context. Learning and teaching strategies will be developed and implemented, appropriate to students' needs, to enable all students to participate fully in the module
